Why Is My Baby Sweating So Much at Night?

You've finally got the baby down. The room is quiet, the monitor is on, and tiptoe back to bed only to check on them an hour later and find their little head damp with sweat and their sheet soaked through. If this sounds familiar, you're not alone; baby night sweats are one of the most common concerns new parents have. The good news is that most of the time, it's completely normal; however,  that doesn't mean there's nothing you can do about it.

Why Babies Sweat at Night

Babies are terrible at regulating their own body temperature. Unlike adults, whose bodies have years of practice adjusting to temperature changes, newborns and young infants are still developing that ability. Their sweat glands are active, but their internal thermostat? Still figuring things out.

Here's what's actually happening:

Babies spend a significant amount of time in deep sleep, which is when the body temperature naturally rises. More deep sleep means more opportunity to overheat.

Their bodies are tiny heat generators. Pound for pound, babies produce a surprising amount of body heat. And unlike adults who can kick off a blanket or roll over to a cool spot, babies are largely stuck where you put them. Their heads do most of the sweating. Babies lose a lot of heat (and sweat) through their heads, which is why you often find a damp halo on the crib sheet even when the rest of them seems fine.

The sleep environment matters a lot. Even a room that feels comfortable to you can be too warm for a baby. The AAP recommends keeping the baby's room between 68–72°F for safe, comfortable sleep.

When to Talk to Your Pediatrician

Most baby nights sweating is nothing to worry about, it's just their little bodies working hard. However, it is worth mentioning to your pediatrician if you notice sweating accompanied by:

  • Rapid or labored breathing

  • Unusual fussiness or difficulty waking

  • Poor weight gain

  • Sweating even during calm, cool moments (not just sleep)

How the Right Crib Sheet Makes a Real Difference

Once you've ruled out anything medical, the next step is looking at your baby's sleep environment, and the crib sheet is a great place to start. Think about it: the crib sheet is the one thing in direct contact with your baby all night long. If it's trapping heat and absorbing moisture without releasing it, your baby is essentially sleeping on a warm, damp surface which does not create restful sleep for either of you. Standard cotton crib sheets are soft and familiar, but they absorb sweat and hold onto it, keeping it close to your baby's skin. This is where moisture-wicking fabric changes the game.

Introducing Wicked Little Sleepers Crib Sheets

Our Wicked Little Sleepers crib sheets are made from the same performance moisture-wicking fabric that keeps adults cool on our full-size Wicked Sheets. Here's what makes them different:

  • Moisture-wicking technology pulls sweat away from your baby's skin and releases it, rather than letting it sit and soak. That means a drier, more comfortable surface all night long.

  • Breathable fabric helps regulate your baby's temperature so they're less likely to overheat, which is a key factor in safe, healthy infant sleep.

  • Soft on sensitive skin, because breathable and performance-driven doesn't mean scratchy. Our sheets are gentle enough for even the most sensitive newborn skin.

  • Easy care, the last thing a tired parent needs is high-maintenance laundry. Wicked Little Sleepers sheets can be washed easily and hold up after repeated cycles..

A Few Other Tips for Keeping Baby Cool at Night

Beyond the crib sheet, here are a few other ways to help your little one sleep more comfortably:

  • Dress them lightly. A single layer of breathable cotton or moisture-wicking sleepwear is usually enough. Skip the extra blankets and opt for a sleep sack instead.

  • Keep the room cool. Aim for 68–72° and add a small fan to keep air circulating (pointed away from the crib.)

  • Skip the waterproof mattress cover if possible, or at least try to choose a breathable one. Standard waterproof covers can trap heat significantly.

Better Sleep for Baby Means Better Sleep for Everyone

When your baby sleeps more comfortably, everyone in the house sleeps better. The right crib sheet is a small change with a surprisingly big impact and Wicked Little Sleepers are designed to give your baby the cool, dry, comfortable sleep they deserve. Shop Wicked Little Sleepers crib sheets and see the difference for yourself.

As always, follow safe sleep guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Place babies on their back on a firm, flat surface with no loose bedding, pillows, or bumpers in the crib.
