How to Reduce Allergens in the Bedroom
Allergies are characterized by an over-reaction of the immune system to certain substances, or “allergens” that are inhaled, eaten, injected, or touched. Symptoms include: sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose or throat, coughing, and skin rashes or hives (www.aafa.org/certified).
Allergens in the home can be hiding in unexpected, hard to reach places and trigger asthma and allergy symptoms. Although it is impossible to completely remove all household allergens from the home, you can certainly reduce them to more manageable levels for those with sensitivities.
One single cleaning or product is not enough to help reduce and control all of the allergens that are trapped in your home, but you can utilize these helpful tips to see the benefits of better indoor air quality…starting in your bedroom:
- Wash bedding and pillow cases regularly in water that is at least 130° to activate detergent and kill off germs and bacteria.
- Dry bedding on low-medium heat until "just dry" to avoid the growth of mildew in areas that are still damp.
- Store bedding in breathable locations, not stored in air-tight containers where germs and moisture can get trapped.
- Replace your mattress every 10 years; replace your pillows at leave every 2 years.
- Use a mattress pad that has an allergen barrier which protects both you and your mattress.
- Vacuum the floors, rugs, and yes, even your mattresses weekly!
